Shotgun Shell Handgun - Pistols are reactive tools. They are carried on the person to respond to a threat. They can be kept ready at home to face any threat at home. If we have a warning, we are often advised to use a rifle or shotgun.

Then the pistol is the weapon of choice. Although pistols are not the most powerful weapons, when we need a weapon to save our lives, they are often what we have on hand. I have been evaluating the Judge Demi for several months and have formed a favorable opinion of the specialty use revolver.

Shotgun Shell Handgun

The Judge is a five-shot revolver that fires either the .410 Bore shotgun shell or the .45 Colt cartridge. This means true versatility. Likewise, the design limits the revolver's accuracy and range. As a pure short range home defender, Demi Judge has qualified.

What The Heck Is A Shotgun Revolver?

There is a considerable argument that achieving the objective faster and achieving success - any success - faster is important. This is true. I've been taught that it's better to slow down and take a center shot than to miss quickly. This is not to say that quick success is impossible; It just takes practice.

The judge addresses this need by providing a shot load. The .410 Bore isn't a powerhouse, but with the right load—and that's the key—it offers a solid defense option. Surprisingly, my assessment shows that the bull judge may also be protected against predators at close range. My test was perhaps the most common judge, a steel-frame revolver with a 3.0-inch barrel.

The revolver is fairly light, handles better than its unattractive appearance suggests, and offers practitioners a good probability of success. Fit, finish and smoothness of action are good. The revolver has a red fiber optic front sight. This sight provides a good point of aim and allows for quick target acquisition.

The Taurus .410 and .45 Colt were illegal enough to design and manufacture a revolver chambered for both the shotgun shell and the small .45 Colt smoothbore pistol. There is a gun, but it is very shallow.

Casull: A Legendary Handgun Hunting Cartridge

Like all double-action revolvers, the Judge is easy to use. Open the cylinder, load the chambers and pull the trigger to fire. The rack has no slide and no safety to operate. The idea is to allow the shooter to get a faster shot with a shot load. Although each pellet does not carry much energy, the immediate effect of multiple projectile charges produces excellent damage.

You've probably seen videos and commercials where Referee Demi is shot at a target and hit with a shot at the target. Birdshot is a small shooting standard that aims to humanely kill a bird with a few shots. It is not useful for personal protection. Like shooting a full-sized shotgun, birdshot is good for practice, but not for personal defense. A birdshot of 7 to 9 shots can carry hundreds of small particles.

In the typical personal safety range, this method goes from 18 to 32 inches. There are 7 yards beyond which bird watching is useless. Worse, the smallest shot only penetrates a few inches. A criminal wearing a heavy winter jacket cannot be hurt. At about 15 feet, the Federal 4 load carries #3 buckshot and has a combined shape of less than three inches. This is the load of choice for those using the .410 load for personal defense.

The federal load is advertised at about 750 fps, but in reality the Judge has 800 fps. Total load is 292 grains. Winchester offers the PDX load with three flat discs and a BB load with a total load of over 300 grains. With this charge, the discs are often too large (15 feet by 16 inches) to hit the center of the target.

Taurus Judge Review: .410 Shotgun Revolver?

The Hornedy .410 defensive load consists of two rounds of balls followed by a .41 caliber slug. The slug usually tracks straight to the point of aim with the balls spread around the center. To determine how the shot travels from 5 to 10 yards, it is important to frame the shot on a paper target.

In my opinion, 7 yards is the outer limit for these loads, although the Hornedy Slug with its FTX design is useful a little further. The latter, buckshot, and specialty loads are useful for home defense and short-range defense against predators. Penetration tests on water jugs and wet newspapers show that these charges will cause severe damage.

, bird shot can penetrate the six-inch gallon jug, and some shots will penetrate the second jug, but very little. Federal's 2 ½ inch shell penetrates over 24 inches with 4 OOO balls, corresponding to 18 inches of gelatin. This is wonderful.

The Winchester PTX load shows excellent shape. However, all three drives in the PDX offer a 3 x 4 pattern at 15 feet. The largest form is composed of 12 bp. The Hornady FTX slug penetrates 15 inches from this revolver, and two rounds of balls produce a total group of 3 to 5 inches at 15 feet.

Taurus Raging Judge 28 Gauge Revolver

These heavy charges should have devastating effects at an average range of 15 to 21 feet, 7 magical yards. In fact there are more possibilities throughout a room or bedroom. The tee should be straight but wide enough to aid in hitting 10 to 15 feet. This pistol is not effective past 21 feet with shot loads.

Another option is to load the Judge with .45 Colt ammunition. The Judge is a .45 Colt revolver with the option to fire .410 bullets to comply with federal law regarding pistols and shotguns. The barrel is shot. The length of the .45 Colt bullet from chamber to muzzle seems to limit bounce velocity and accuracy. In some cases this is true. However, my latest experiment shows that this loss is not always what we think.

The Judge is strong enough for heavy loads, including SWC's hard cast bullet loads. It depends on how much feedback tolerance you have. A good choice for personal defense is Hornedy Critical Defense. This 185 grain bullet has a good reputation for expansion and penetration. The muzzle velocity of the three-inch barreled Taurus Judge is 891 fps. The reaction is moderate. This payload will hit the target. At 15 yards, five shots from a steady shooting position yielded a 3-inch group. It is very accurate for personal protection.

Another choice to consider is the Winchester PDX 225-grain JHP. This load packs a heavy punch at 780 fps. This lead weight provides high velocity. The .45 Colt is among the few pistols that perform well without bullet expansion. This was demonstrated in the Old West and in many engagements.

Why A Shotgun Is A Great Option For Home Defense—plus 3 Guns You Should Buy

A solid choice is the 255-grain Winchester bullet. This bullet exits the judge at 770 fps. (And compare 778 fps from a 4 ¾ inch revolver.) Penetration is about 18 inches, perfect for personal defense, but recoil is light. It's a relatively accurate load with a 3-inch, 15-yard group. If the judge owner expects a longer shot, the .45 Colt offers proven damage without much recoil.

The Judge is a special pistol. This is by no means a go-anywhere, do-nothing pistol. But what it does, it does very well. It is worth your time to research the judge.
