In the US military, a "band" is a badge or word worn above the shoulder that identifies the unit a soldier belongs to.
The band is especially valuable to the U.S. military because it traditionally uses pictures rather than words to symbolize the shoulder pads worn to identify military units. Identifying the special skills of individual soldiers or entire units that only wear additional shoulder pads that use words instead of pictures to represent that skill. For example, the personnel of the special forces unit will wear the uniform of the unit with arrows, swords, and lightning bolts, but only the soldiers who have completed the training of the special forces will be awarded and will wear additional clothes with the inscription "Special Forces". Some bands are awarded in recognition of individual military skill and marksmanship and are worn regularly by soldiers. These bands are also considered insignia and have the equivalent of a metal badge worn by soldiers on their chests if the uniform does not have shoulder plates (such as military uniforms). Other bands recognize the special skills of all classes and are considered part of a particular class's armor, worn by soldiers only when belonging to that class.
The Jungle Expert tab is unique in that it is awarded to each soldier to recognize their skill, and is only worn by soldiers when they belong to a specific class.
Similarly, bands awarded statewide by the US Army National Guard may be worn only during active duty.
There are currently four permanent marksmanship/skills bands authorized to be worn by the US Army. By seniority, the Presidential Orchestra, the Special Forces Orchestra, the Rangers, and the Sapper Band. Only three skill bars can be worn at once. Currently, there is no record of people taking all four skill/firearms tabs in the military.

The President's Hundred Bar is a shooting bar for soldiers who place among the top 100 competitors in the President's Competition at the annual National Rifle Competition at Camp Perry, Ohio. This is a permanent award to be with the individual and there is no annual requirement to maintain the President's principle. Most competitors compete every year to ensure that less skilled people don't get the tiger.
On May 27, 1958, the National Rifle Association asked the Deputy Chief of Staff to approve the group's personnel for presentation to members of the "President's Century." The NRA's plan was to give the cloth band along with the metal band during the 1958 National Selection. The cloth band received considerable attention and was approved for use on uniforms on March 3, 1958.
The Presidential Ribbon is worn 1/2 inch below the shoulder seam on the left sleeve of men's and women's military jackets. The band has a version suitable for wearing over battle dress uniforms (BDUs). The bar is set forth in 29-16c, AR 670-1, 8-53, and AR 600-8-22. Fully embroidered yellow ribbon, 4¼ inches (10.80 cm) long, 5/8 inch (1.59 cm) high, centered in green letters 1/4 inch (.64 cm) high, with the inscription "Century President". The metal replica is 2 inches (5.08 cm) wide.
The Special Forces Bar is a US Army Service School qualification bar awarded to any soldier who successfully completes the Special Forces Course or Special Officer Qualification Course. Soldiers awarded the Special Forces Command are allowed to wear it for the remainder of their military careers, even if they do not serve in the Special Forces Command. A Special Forces bar can be revoked up the chain of command, for example, for a DUI or misconduct by a Special Forces member.

The Special Forces Band was established in 1983 and is a square embroidered patch on the upper left shirt of military uniforms. The ribbon is 3¼ inches wide and light blue with yellow embroidery.
The Ranger Band is a specialty band awarded to members of the United States Army, civilians, and non-US military personnel upon graduation from the United States Army Ranger School. The Ranger Tab was approved by the Chief of Staff of the Army on October 30, 1950. Ranger tab may be waived IAW AR 600-8-22, section 1-31, para. 13.

The Sapper Bar is a specialty bar for graduates of the US Army Sapper School. The Sapper Tab was approved by the Army Chief of Staff on 28 June 2004. Sapper Tab at Ft. Leonardwood, MO malpractice or failure to meet engineering standards. Any requests will be handled through the USASC.

The full color bar is 2⅜ inches (6.03 cm) long, 11/16 inches (1.75 cm) wide, has a 1/8 inch (.32 cm) red border, and is marked "SAPPER" in 5/16 inch white letters. (.79 cm) high. The jungle sub-band is identical, with an olive background and the word "SAPPER" in black lettering, while the desert-ravaged band has a khaki background with the word "SAPPER" in spicy brown lettering.
State shooting ranges with special award rules vary from state to state. For example, in Texas, bars are awarded to the top 20 shooters. Each year there are 8 awards for rifles, 8 for pistols, two for snipers and two for machine guns. Because recipients compete against all other Soldiers who have already received the award, Texas may only have one or two new recipients each year. This is not a permanent award, it is given annually.
The Airborne Band is the shoulder unit of the United States Air Force. Air forces are military units, usually infantry, formed to move and "land" into battle by aircraft. Therefore, they can be placed behind the enemy and able to operate almost anywhere without warning. The band is placed immediately above and touching the arm of the shoulder. Bar measures 2½ inches (6.35 cm) long and 11/16 inches (1.75 cm) wide. Letters are 5/16 inch (.79 cm) high.
