Ship Dynamics Drawing

If you've spent any time on Twitter this week, you've probably noticed that fandom art has been popping up as part of the viral "Ship Dynamics" meme — where people share their love for their favorite characters, mostly from fan artists, through stick figures.

For anyone unfamiliar with the concept of "ship", it's a very popular word in fandom, a shorthand for "relationship" used both as a noun to describe a favorite romantic combination (e.g. "He/Lea is my favorite ship. "), and "shipping". A verb that expresses an action that combines, or takes root to get together and live happily ever after (eg "I'll send Rory/Paris").
The key to this meme is that it doesn't actually involve discussion of specific ships. The general use of cartoon imagery emphasizes that the ship's dynamic includes personality traits that can be applied to many characters during dialogue and attract many fans. For example, here's a popular example of a generic ship dynamic that many fans can clearly relate to:

One of the best things about this meme is how versatile it is. The surrounding conversation on Twitter not only has a wide range of dessert art, but a truly endless supply of shipping variations, as well as a lot of discussion about the practice of shipping, and why we love the things we love.

But before we part ways, let's take a look at how the "ship dynamics" meme evolved over time and then went viral overnight.
In many ways, this particular meme seems to explode from the Twitter fandom ID overnight - that is, it seems to have come out of nowhere and spread across fan communities on the platform, in less than two days, between 16 and 17 April.
But the increase is not easy. Discussions about ship dynamics have dominated another social media platform, Tumblr. In recent years, several popular ship dynamics have entered into fandom culture. The concept of "Cinnamon Roller Ships" and "Garbage Ships" became popular during the intense fan debate surrounding two representative ships as polarizing forces in the fandom - Stormpilot and Kylux, respectively.

Then, in 2017, he got an idea that the ultimate ship dynamic, which includes all other ship dynamics, is a child of a sweater and an absolute nightmare. This was simply known as "The Dynamic" and discussions about it dominated fandom debates on Tumblr until 2018. The popular (and unfortunately non-canonical)

The Rory/Paris ship epitomizes this pairing: Rory, the boy in the sweater, is wise, smart, responsible, and the poster child for a sane girl next door. Paris is similarly bright, but a collection of neuroses, paranoia, agitation and cautious suspicion - that is, a complete nightmare. Together they form an unlikely but compelling friendship that has sent many fans.
The discussion of "flexibility" has spawned an endless debate as to why a bond does or does not fit within this giant umbrella term. In the year In early 2019, discussions about ship dynamics are once again becoming more general, but memories of them are now captured by a distorted self-perception of how different ship dynamics interact, overlap, and form.
Around the same time that art quizzes on Tumblr, where fan artists were encouraged to "draw your OTP" — that's One True Pairing for fandom newbs — became popular, blogs emerged dedicated to asking questions and collecting the results. This event was an extension of the popular Tumblr phrase "visualize your OTP", which served as a text prompt and allowed people to enter their choices into an infinite number of romantic scenarios. The "Draw Your OTP" prompt often saw artists use stick figures in their illustrations to represent a loose and universal pair variable rather than specific fictional pairs.
So all of this fan talk around ships, combined with the practice of using stick figures as generic ship characters, sets up fans on Tumblr to develop meme art around ship dynamics. Eventually, the "ship dynamics" meme had an instant viral quality because it was simply built on a shared understanding of how ships work, and people love to adapt their favorite ships into larger romantic artifacts within the fandom.

The meme gained momentum over the course of a few days before slowly detonating, with ideas taking root in individual Twitter conversations and pushing the topic of "ship dynamics" into the mainstream. For example, there was this low-key viral tweet on April 7:

It was followed a few days later by this little popular art post – the first iteration of what would become a Twitter meme – on April 10:

Among the many fun things about the "ship dynamics" meme is built-in wry facepalming about ships that many love, and that we love them too.

Many of the most popular ship dynamic posts present the poster's favorite ship as a mix of misbehavior, treachery, forgetfulness, and the ability to wreak havoc.

I appreciate all your contributions and artistic efforts, but this is truly the best ship dynamic pic.twitter.com/RRKIcubl9n — Sunshine Moon ️ (@SunshineMoonRX) April 17, 2019
In fact, many of the most popular ship variable entries have in common a combination of many contrasting ship characteristics - the famous, sophisticated optimism with the cold, impersonal, shy wallflower with the eclipse, etc.

And the discussion around the meme is counterintuitive in itself. Many people have pointed out the offensive nature of many of the deck dynamics being respected, and then in turn criticized or defended those deck choices. However, many of the ship's examples qualify as healthy memes in keeping with the internet's love of sanity, as have many others.

One Of My Favorite Dynamic Ships
At a basic level, the many contradictions in the "turning the ship" meme make sense, because the meme asks such a universal question: What is so fascinating about human relationships? There are as many different answers as there are people on the planet, but as with any fairy tale, there are immediately familiar species that appeal to many segments of society.
There is also the confessional nature of this type of meme. As they tease out the details, it looks like a blog meme or an Instagram meme where posters are encouraged to answer personal questions about themselves. "What's your favorite type of ship?" It's a pit stop in online surveys that ask us to engage in performance introspection, but it seems to really make people happy. After all, who among us in the fandom hasn't waxed rhapsodic about our favorite ship?
For my part, I realized a decade ago that most of my favorite ships are variations on Jane Austen's main ensembles.

It has had a huge impact on the way I see and structure myself and my OTPs in my own fiction. A friend of mine realized it was hers last year.
