Military Tacoma - The all-new, redesigned 2022 Toyota Tundra was the star of Toyota's truck lineup this year. But Toyota isn't giving the midsize Tacoma the cold shoulder. It added a few updates this year ahead of a full redesign expected for the 2023 model year. Case in point is the 2022 but updated Tacoma SR5 Trail Edition, which arrived for review with less than 50 miles on it. Toyota introduced the Trail Edition last year, but it's new this year and only available as a 4X4. This year it also adds device upgrades, new design elements and new recording features. Appearance My 2022 Tacoma SR5 Trail Edition 4×4 Double Cab is in Army Green. Interestingly, the Tacoma build page lists this as the only color currently available for the Trail Edition, although the new color for 2022 is listed as Lunar Rock. (Toyota also notes that several other colors are currently "out of stock.") The Trail Edition is updated with new 16-inch bronze wheels accented by a bronze-accented TRD Pro heritage-inspired grille. The 2022 Trail Edition wheels are also 0.5 inches wider for 2022 and are fitted with new Goodyear all-terrain tires. Other features include a unique badge on the rear tailgate and colored rear bumpers to match the exterior paint color. The optional TRD Performance Exhaust also looks good. The SR5 has been fitted with projector headlamps and I hope the next generation model will extend LEDs to standard across the range. Powertrain Under the hood, the 3.5-liter V6 produces 278 horsepower and 265 pound-feet of torque. Power feels good in traffic for a 4,400+ pound pickup, but it doesn't jump off the line. It's mated to a 6-speed automatic rather than the Tundra's new 10-speed automatic. (Read more about the Tundra's powertrain in Jerry's review here.) Interior The interior of the Trail Edition is tough and sporty, with plenty of plastic on the door panels and a semi-soft dash. The center console bin is more padded. The black fabric seats have unique brown stitching. They are flat and on the firmer side without a lot of lateral reinforcement, so I can't say they were particularly comfortable for me, but that's subjective. A 10-way power driver's seat with wooden bolster is standard. In terms of space, there's plenty of headroom, but if you're tall, the driver's legroom isn't much. This is consistent with a mid-size, not a full-size pickup truck. A new feature of the bay is an insulated storage compartment on the driver's side that doubles as a cooler. There's a mute button on the leather-wrapped steering wheel, thanks Toyota. While on the smaller side, the 4.2-inch digital driver display with traditional analog switches is still useful and easy to see, as it's bright and the text isn't too small, thankfully. The center console features 4x4 controls and standard dual-zone climate control. The console area has a TRD Pro red shift knob and handbrake. The rear seats look like stadium seats and are slightly higher than the front seats. The seats are also flat and on the firmer side. The rear seat provided more legroom, but passengers will have to do without a fold-down armrest. Fantastic all-weather floor mats are standard on the Trail Edition. Utility and Towing A nice upgrade for 2022 is new lockable storage boxes in the pickup bed. The tailgate isn't fancy, but it's easy to use. The Tacoma's towing package is standard on V6 models, and the Double Cab can tow up to 6,400 pounds. Equipment Upgrades The Tacoma Trail Edition adds more lift to both the front and rear for 2022 with a 1.1-inch front and 0.5-inch rear suspension lift. Designers also removed the front air dam found on the SR5 to help improve ground clearance. It also comes with a standard locking rear differential, and the chassis skid plates are borrowed from the TRD Off-Road Grade. Ride and Drive The Tacoma offers a comfortable ride that I found to be surprisingly quiet, minus engine noise on initial acceleration. It also offers a great ride height, which is to be expected with that extra lift. Keep in mind that this also means a bit of walking up and down. The inside front door handles are a nice feature. Technology My model comes with optional parking sonar and Premium Audio with 8-inch touchscreen/navigation. The multimedia screen is responsive as expected with all Toyotas. Voice commands worked well and I liked that the navigation worked without being connected to an app, as this is not always the case with Toyota vehicles. Toyota's multimedia system features wireless Android Auto, Apple CarPlay and Amazon Alexa compatibility, SiriusXM capability, and more. There are three USB ports, but sorry, this model doesn't have wireless charging. Options In equipment, my test model adds about $10,000 to the SR5's base price. The most expensive variant of this model is the Trail Edition package ($3765). Other options include the Technology Package ($600), Parking Sonar and Premium Audio with 8-inch touchscreen/navigation system ($1,710), roof rack ($399), bed step ($300) and door edge protection ($140). TRD options include a TRD shifter ($140), a TRD performance exhaust system ($799) and a TRD air filter ($90). Safety Toyota Safety Sense P (TSS-P) is standard on the Tacoma. It includes a pre-collision system with pedestrian detection, high-speed dynamic radar cruise control, lane departure warning and automatic high beams. The optional Technology Package on my model includes a blind spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert. Verdict At just $45,000, the Tacoma Trail Edition is an excellent value for an off-road capable midsize pickup truck. The Trail Edition 4X4 also has some great upgrades, but the colors seem limited at the moment. Also, keep in mind that the next generation Tacoma is expected in 2023. What I liked most: The look. What I would change: Switch to LED headlights and a more fuel-efficient transmission. MSRP: Base price $35,655; in equipment $44,813 with destination. Official Color: Army Green. Fuel consumption: 18 city/ 22 highway/20 combined. Odometer reading as tested: 48 miles. Weight: 4,445 lbs. Spare tire: full size. Length-Width-Height: 212.3" long / 74.4" wide / 70.6" high. Fuel tank capacity: 21.1 liters with driver side filler. Towing capacity: 6,400 lbs. Payload: 1,155 lbs. 2022 Toyota Tacoma Trail Edition in a Nutshell: Stylish mid-size SUV with great updates for 2022. Warranty: 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty; 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty. Final meeting place: Baja California, Mexico. Manufacturer's website : Toyota

For Walt Wagner, owner of New Mexico-based Tactical Application Vehicles (TAV), the project was inspired by the loss of his cousin Vincent in 2013. When Vincent died, Walt offered to buy his beloved 2009 Tacoma from his cousin's wife. After acquiring the truck, TAV began the process of honoring the Walt family in a unique way by bringing the experience, reliability and functionality of their elite unit to life in best practice vehicle engineering.

Vincent and Walt were first cousins and very close. According to Walt, Vincent went into the US Army wanting to be a Ranger and achieved that and then some at a very young age. By the time he left the Army, he had been deployed several times overseas, where he was HALO certified. Member of the Long Range Surveillance Division (LRSD). When Vincent showed up to his new LRSD unit with a beard (you shouldn't), they nicknamed him the Goat. This name remained with him even after he left the army and started working. doing nuclear security with me. There he was named Ranger Goat." Vincent and Walt worked as federal agents for about four years before "Vincent had the opportunity to contract overseas as a shooting medic. This allowed him to put away money for his wife and two little girls. After that he decided to stay at home where it is safe and get a sister. One night, after wrestling with his daughters a bit and kissing them good night, he went to bed. He died in his sleep that night."
Walt has an extensive history in the military and law enforcement, and that experience is evident in the TAV buildings. Walt explains that “with every Toyota we build, we focus on mission needs first. Customer's
