Glock 17 Gen 3 - First released in 1982, the Glock 17 (G17) sparked what would prove to be a revolution in firearms manufacturing and forever change the world of modern handguns. Only eclipsed by its younger brother the Glock 19, the number of G17s in the hands of civilians, law enforcement agencies and military units around the world is staggering. And for good reason: the Glock 17 pistol is a workhorse that will provide a lifetime of service.

With that kind of history, I'm obviously using "long-term assessment" loosely. I can reasonably guarantee that there are first generation G17s with thirty years and hundreds of thousands of rounds through the barrel still in use today. My 3rd generation review gun only put about 7-8000 rounds through it over a five year period. Again, these numbers aren't world-shattering, but I can't think of any other gear that I've carried almost every day for five years that has such a clean service record.

This G17 was produced in 2009 and has a Tenifer finish known for its corrosion resistance and surface hardness. Sometime in 2012, Glock switched to a Nitride finish for its guns, drawing criticism from some fans who say it wears faster and is more prone to surface rust than the Tanifer treatment. Even with Tenifer's proven finish, my G17 shows a healthy amount of case wear on the edges of the slide. Indeed, I'd be disappointed if my G17 showed no signs of character building: it's a tool, not a showpiece.

The polymer frame, apart from the grip piece pattern I chose, is almost flawless. While my gun has never been abused (I'm not a first-rate snake eater), it has seen its fair share of use in climates ranging from the dry, dusty high plains of Colorado to the hot, humid summers of New England. The frame shows no signs of discolouration, cracks or deformations. The frame rails are pristine, as is the interior of the gun. You'd be hard-pressed to tell this gun apart from the one that rolled off the assembly line in Smyrna last week.

A quick look at the cabin and gun shows nothing out of the ordinary except that I need to be a little more diligent in my cleaning regiment. This barrel will last my entire ammo budget and then some.

I can honestly say that in 7000+ rounds this G17 has not had a failure of any kind. It's a feature that we, in everyday life, sometimes take for granted in a modern combat pistol, but one that shouldn't be overlooked so easily. If you put trust and confidence in a hardware component, it needs to be backed up by hard (and personal) evidence. Most of the ammo that went through this gun was a steady diet of Winchester Ranger 147gr JHP, Federal HST 124gr and 147gr JHP and excess +P FMJ. This Glock 17 is a true omnivore when it comes to ammo types and has yet to experience a single hiccup.

Probably the most talked about feature on Glock pistols is the trigger. Admittedly, the G17 trigger isn't nearly as buttery as a custom 1911's. And rightly so, as Glock's safe action system negates the need for an external safety. That said, the Glock trigger just works for me; It is sharp with a defined reset that provides fast and accurate tracking images. Obviously the weight and feel of the trigger pull is a matter of personal preference, but I have yet to find a trigger that works as well for me on a carry pistol as the Glock's 5.5 pound trigger.

The other, let's say controversial, characteristic of Glock pistols is the grip angle. And I give in and agree that the grip critics have a point. The learning curve (and the grip angle) is steep. Many new Glock owners tend to shoot a little high with the muzzle turned up a little. This is something that cannot be overcome in training and in fact I have started to prefer the grip angle. Pushing the gun's muzzle down tightens my wrist and provides a solid, stable shooting position. Full disclosure, I decided to go with a professional grip reduction and occlusion pattern from Business End Customs that allows me to position my large hands better around the grip. I would probably skip this step if I bought a 4th gen G17 with replaceable backstraps.

The longer overall length, the added weight of a larger gun, and the 9×19 cartridge make the G17 a flat-shooting gun with only a slight muzzle rise even under rapid strings of fire. It is not unusual for me to be able to place three aimed shots accurately, out of the holster, in less than two seconds. I don't shoot competition, but that's a decent intermediate time for this stage of fire at full power load.

I can't believe Glock hid their awareness when they made the G17. It was designed more for even/open carry, mainly due to the length of the slide and grip. Even with the right holster and body type, the G17 is a more decent carry. If you're smaller, the equally iconic Glock 19 is probably a better fit as it shaves off about an inch on both ends. My gun has the addition of a weapon light, the Surefire x300, which I believe is a must for any combat pistol.

My G17 has spent its entire working life inside a Raven Concealment Phantom holster except for the rare occasion when traveling in a Safariland drop leg. With hundreds of holster options on the market, the Raven still comes out on top and complements the G17 nicely. At some point I will do a long term review of Raven's offerings because they really are top notch.

Beyond the bulk of a full-size pistol, the G17 is truly a fantastic weapon to carry as a defensive handgun. With a standard capacity of 17 plus one in the chamber, I rarely find myself carrying a spare magazine on my body. With my setup, the Taran Tactical Innovations (TTI) magazine baseplates add two or three extra rounds. That's a decent amount of firepower for a concealed handgun. A side benefit of the TTI baseplates is that their smooth aluminum surface adds a tamper-proof quality to the gun when worn under a shirt or jacket.

I am a firm believer that there is no such thing as a perfect defensive gun. Each Sagittarius will have their own priorities and will be forced to make compromises based on their personal situation. For me, the G17 is probably as close as it gets to being my favorite. Part of that belief is based on intangibles that give you that sense of security whether you're holding the G17 or just knowing it's on your hip. Regardless, this is a classic pistol with a solid history, and any gun enthusiast should have one in their arsenal, whether you choose to make it your defensive weapon or not. After they are fully grown, you can leave them in water and store them in or out of the fridge.

When you are ready to use them, simply drain the excess water in a colander before placing them in the reservoir, but do not dry them as they need to be lubricated to function properly.

Do not upgrade any part of your toy gel blaster as this will void the warranty. Upgrades refer to pulling or unlocking some of the blasters, changing springs or upgrading the battery from 7.4V to 11.V.
